Art Apocalypse: Blizzard’s Wilson Talks Diablo III Design Decisions

Jay Wilson, Blizzard’s Lead Designer on Diablo 3, looks like he’s one busy man. Along with his interview with MTV, he also conducted one with Kotaku.

In it he talks about the “complex” issue of the art direction and the variety they want the art in the game to bring. He then goes onto the issue of that the game looks like WoW which many people have brought up.

Dear Blizzard: Do Not Change The Art Direction!

I felt very compelled to create this petition in response to the recent and very vocal requests from some members of the Diablo fans community who are, in a word, ‘disappointed’ with Diablo 3’s current artistic direction.

This petition is created to represent those of us, whom I feel are great in number, who genuinely believe that Blizzard should continue to do what they are doing with Diablo 3’s art direction and not bend to the wishes of those who would wish to see Diablo 3’s beauty and vibrancy reduced to shades of gray and brown.

Diablo 3 World Lore & Environment Art Panel

For those of you who couldn’t watch Blizzard’s Worldwide Invitational live earlier today, you may have missed Blizzard’s World Lore and Environmental Art panel featuring the Lead World Designer, Leon Boyarsky and Art Director, Brian Morrisroe.

If you’re interested in discovering the design philosophy behind the interesting locales within Diablo 3’s world of Sanctuary, you’ll definitely want to check this out.

In case you’re wondering, Leon Boyarsky was the Art Director for Fallout, Arcanum and Vampire: Bloodlines. Good stuff!
